So far only stretched to 12g, but I'm so ridiculously afraid of getting a blowout, I keep checking my ears several times a day.. I haven't experienced any pain, bleeding, soreness, puss etc when stretching, but one of my ears feel kind of warm if I take the crescent-thing (surgical steel) out and then put it back in. So I'm wondering, will I know it if I have a blowout, does it hurt? I can't even see through my ear-hole because it's so small, so what if I have a blowout but don't know it?ಥ_ಥ

Well, it’s good to hear that you haven’t had any issues with stretching. I hope that means you’re waiting a comfy amount of time before you stretch, yeah?

Did you stretch with the pincher? That’s not the best thing… Also, if you’re removing it often, you’re disrupting the healing process! Can you find some regular steel or glass plugs? That will make the healing much smoother!

You will know when you have a blowout, because a little lip or bubble of tissue will be poking out!

How to avoid it!

  1. Stretch slowly! Take your time between stretches! 1.5-3mo in the smaller sizes… Increase the time as you stretch up.
  2. Listen to your body! If it hurts, stop. Put your plugs back in, wait a bit, and then try again.
  3. Always lube up! Jojoba oil, vit e oil and olive oil are great things to use. ALWAYS lube up when stretching or putting in plugs. You can get a blowout even on healed ears.

A blowout is a sign that too much pressure was put on it. You know how when you push the taper through? If you’re skin cannot stretch to take it, it pushes outwards, relieving the pressure. Not good.

To help with stretching, you could do oil massages! Vitamin E is really swell at breaking up scar tissue, which then makes your skin happier and easier to stretch. You want to be nice to your ears to avoid scar tissue! So always be slow and listen.

Let me know if anything else comes up or submit a picture of your ears! :D

Hi, there. I just gauged up from a 2g to a 0 using an acrylic taper and it's really tender. I'm still wearing the taper. There's no discharge as far as I can tell, but it stings pretty bad. It was at a 2g for about a month and a half before I attempted to gauge up. Made a stupid decision and I blew out. So I've waited until the blow out healed and then some to try again. But because of that experience, I'm really scared of another blowout. Should I be? There's no blood. It just stings.

If you keep up with your antics, things aren’t going to get better.

  1. Acrylic is crap. Acrylic tapers are double crap. Acrylic cannot be sterilized and it’s porous, so you’re holding crap next to a damaged ear. Germs + an opened wound. Ya dig?
  2. Don’t wear tapers! Tapers are not meant for wearing! They’re long and add weight to your fresh ear. They also make it easy to disturb it.
  3. Get yourself some glass or stainless steel.
  4. You need to wait way longer to stretch. 2g to 0g is huge! You should have given it AT LEAST 3 months!
  5. It’s called stretching up. Gauging refers to a unit of measurement! It’s like saying you’re inching up. Nope.
  6. Find some 1g stainless steel or glass plugs. They’re real.

I just got a vertical labret 2 days ago. the top is already sinking in my lip--almost disappearing.. is it normal for the swelling to cause this ? or should i go back to the shop and get a longer bar immediately?

Absolutely! Go get a longer bar!

I love your blog! I never knew what kind of tape to use, and after reading your blog I started using PTFE to stretch up from a 0g to 00g and I didn’t have a single problem! I fit the 00 glass plugs in perfectly! No infection or tearing or anything! Thanks for all your good advice!

My beautiful glass plugs I got at Hot Topic for $5 on clearance.
